Harry Kane became the first English player to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001, breaking a 23-year wait for the prize at a ceremony in London.
The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker scored 61 goals in 51 club matches last season, a club record. Including England fixtures, he netted 73 goals and provided 8 assists across 65 matches, the second-highest individual tally in a single season across Europe's top five leagues. Only Lionel Messi's 82-goal haul in 2011-12 exceeds it.
Kane's dominance in the Bundesliga was stark. His 36 goals left the next highest scorer 17 behind. He added 14 Champions League goals, 10 in the German Cup including a hat-trick in the final, and 12 for England. He also became the first Bayern player to win the award since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.
Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe in second place and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal in third. England manager Thomas Tuchel described the award as a "huge honour". Prince William called Kane a "brilliant captain" and "remarkable player".
The win stands out. Kane triumphed without lifting either of football's biggest prizes, having lost Champions League and World Cup semi-finals. Only five times in the past 20 years has the Ballon d'Or gone to a player without a World Cup, Champions League or major continental championship title. Kane joined Messi (three times) and Cristiano Ronaldo in that group.
Kane told Dazn he had doubted his own trajectory early on. "Not many people would have thought it, and maybe even I wouldn't have thought I'd be this far," he said. "I had to go through many ups and downs, especially early in my career. I was never the person that people thought was going to be the superstar."
The former Tottenham striker has continued his form this season, scoring 10 goals in 12 Bayern matches plus 6 in 4 Nations League games for England. Bayern remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga and Champions League. Kane becomes the fifth Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or overall, after Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan.
