Last One Laughing returns with a Halloween twist that adds a new challenge to its already demanding format. Contestants must now refrain not only from laughing but from screaming for nine hours while filmed at Elstree Studios.
The show's winning premise remains intact: comedians attempt to make each other laugh without cracking themselves. The Halloween special introduces horror elements alongside comedy. Participating comics include Phil Wang, Lou Sanders, Tom Allen, Daisy May Cooper and Reece Shearsmith, who combine attempts to amuse and spook their fellow performers.
Wang discovered an unexpected difficulty with the screaming ban. "I didn't know I was a screamer. Turns out I am," he told the Guardian the day after filming wrapped.
Host Jimmy Carr explained the connection between laughter and screams. "Laughs and screams come from the same place," he said. "There's surprise in a joke, and there's surprise in a jump scare. Comedy and horror mess around in the same area. It's the same bit of your brain."
Wang described the taping as "a cross between a gameshow and a psychological experiment." The comedians filmed the special during a sunny summer weekend while performing as though it were Halloween, creating an additional layer of disorientation.
The show's format proved demanding enough that participants emerged visibly affected. In interviews 24 hours after filming ended, the comedians displayed signs of exhaustion from the nine-hour ordeal.
