A new direct train service launched this summer connects Malmö in southern Sweden to Oslo in Norway in 6.5 hours, replacing fragmented bus and train transfers that previously took far longer.
The route, operated by Swedish rail company Snälltåget, offers passengers the option to stop in the seaside town of Varberg or Gothenburg en route. Tickets start at £11 each way. The service has carried more than 25,000 passengers since launching.
The journey follows Sweden's western coastal corridor. Snälltåget's distinctive red-shelled train features a dining carriage described as styled like 1990s Germany, with pink-and-turquoise décor. The carriage carries the smell of cinnamon buns and strong filter coffee, according to a traveller aboard.
